XL takes delivery of RED ONE

XL Films recently took delivery of a RED ONE 4K digital cinema camera system. The revolutionary RED ONE is the brainchild of Oakley founder Jim Jannard. Dissatisfied with the options available in digital motion imaging, Jannard took it upon himself to take on an entire industry, creating a digital cinema camera that exceeds the quality of 35mm film.
So what makes the RED ONE so special? Well, first, unlike most other HD video cameras, the RED ONE uses a single 35mm-sized sensor, yielding the shallow depth of field that helps make 35mm film look so appealing. Second, RED’s proprietary REDCode compression scheme allows filmmakers to work in 4K (4 times the size of 1080p high-definition) with relatively small file sizes. Third, the camera records to a hard drive, so film and videotape costs, film processing costs and expensive tape machines for digitizing are things of the past. Fourth, the price of the camera is very reasonable, giving independent filmmakers and their clients access to a level of quality that in the past was beyond many budgets. And finally, the camera just looks really cool. From an industrial design standpoint the RED ONE is a work of art.
XL’s RED ONE, serial #1720, has been affectionately named “Ginger” after our favorite redhead on Gilligan’s Island.
